White Island is a strato volcano located in the Bay of Plenty 30 miles (approx 50km) off the coast of New Zealand's North Island. The eruptions do not produce lava flows, however it does produce spectacular ash eruptions. The island is about 1 mile wide by 1.5 miles long (2km by 2.5 km). In 1914 there was a collapse in the crater wall destroying a sulfur factory located on the south part of the island. Parts of the building can be seen today (see next page). Inside the crater the main vent normally spews ash as you can see on the bottom of this page. In addition there are many sulfur fumaroles around the area as well. Also you gotta to see this site. Some funny clown actually put a toy dinosaur "Dino" in front of the camera for some added scenery. Maybe I should put a toy Barney dinosaur on Puu Oo and watch it get eaten up the lava or something, now that would be entertainment. This is the official site of New Zealand's Institue of Geological and Nuclear Sciences. Enjoy!! http://www.geonet.org.nz/whiteisland.html
