Tongariro Nat'l Park is great volcanic wonderland in the heart of New Zealand's North Island. The Tongariro volcanic center contains four volcanic cones,Kakaramea, Pihanga, Tongariro, and Ruapehu respectively. The volcanic area is at least 200000 years old and is still active. Mt Ruapehu last erupted in 1996 spewing ash all over the local area. Ngauruhoe is the most active of the volcanic structures. The last eruption was February 1977. The volcano spewed ash and lava. Another area of interest is the Tongariro crossing which unfortunatley I did not have the equipment to go on to. I will do the crossing some day. The Tongariro Crossing has some of the best views around. For more information on Tongariro Volcanics go to theOfficial Tongariro Nat'l Park site.
