MT SAINT HELENS

On the morning of 18 May 1980 it was a calm day in the area of Mt Saint Helens. The peaceful looking mountain has not erupted for over a century. On 0830 a large earthquake shook the mountain. The north face of St Helens blew outward towards the Toutle River valley and Spirit Lake. The eruption was so large that it was heard almost 600 miles away. All that remains is a gaping hole on top of the mountain. The area around St Helens is the devastation area. The blast knocked down trees like matchsticks. Anything in the way of the pyroclastic cloud would not have survived. For more details see the USGS site at :http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Volcanoes/MSH/framework.html
