INTERIOR NEW ZEALAND AND TAUPO VOLCANICS

This section deals with the volcanic activity around the Rotorua area and Lake Taupo. New Zealand's North Island interior is considered very active in volcanic activity. Mt Tarawera, south of Rotorua, erupted around 1886 in a violent fury. The photos you see below are testament to what lies beneath. In fact, the Rotorua area is inside a giant caldera that formed about 220000 years ago.The major thermal areas of Takeke, Tikitere, Lake Rotokawa, and Rotorua-Whakarewarewa are located within the caldera or outside its rim.
