Here is something that is rare on the Hawaiian Islands: A lightning storm. The top three photos were taken on 10 April 2003 during a series of thunderstorms in the area. The reason why the lightning storms are rare are because of the lack of convection to form thunderclouds. The type of clouds that produce lightning are known to the weather world as cumulonimbus clouds. These type of clouds are very common in the southern US and midwest, but rare in Hawaii.
