KILAUEA GALLERY OF 17-18 JANUARY 2004

Welcome to the 17-18 January 2004 gallery. Kilauea Volcano has been putting on a spectacular show since October. The reason for such activity at the vent lies in the plumbing system of the lava tubes. Since the lava is not going over the pali, it is confined on or near the vent. The lava tubes get blocked and then it spills out onto the ground near the vent. This will continue some time until the lava pours over the pali. From the way the rootless shields are structured it may be a while before the activity on or near the vent wanes. So enjoy the new gallery!!
