February - April 2003 Gallery

The photos here were taken on 15 February 2003 when the fire crew was battling a fire while the Chain of Craters Road was closed. The road did not open until the next day so I ended up hiking in from the Kalapana side of the flow field. It was a seven mile hike from Kalapana to the Volcanoes Nat'l Park road end. I tried to get in from the park side but was turned back numerous times by a park ranger. I waited hoping for the road to open but no avail so I had no choice but to do the long hike. I did not want a disappointment on this trip because of the lava crossing the road. The new ocean entry ,Kohola, had formed the day before so I did get to see some cascades of lava with a rainbow in the background.
