MAUNA KEA

Mauna Kea is located on the middle east part of the big island of Hawaii. It stands 13786 above sea level and 33000 feet above the ocean floor making it the tallest mountain in the world if measured from base to peak. Mauna Kea last erupted 20000 years ago and it is considered in the post shield stage, but not extinct. There is a possibility it may erupt in the future. These photos are taken on 20 March 2006. As you can see it does snow in Hawaii. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only area in the world where almost all climates exist in an area less than 100 miles across. At the top are home to many observatories from different countries
