Welcome to the Kilauea Gallery of 1998-1999.
Kilauea is one of the worlds most active
and accessable volcanoes. It stands 4090'
above sea level and it is in the shape of
a shield, hence the name "Shield Volcano"
Wow isn't that something! It is located in
the middle of the Pacific on the island of
Hawaii. Due to the fact there are so many
photos of Kilauea , I decided to catagorize
all the photos according to the year. Luckily
I am still alive !I first came to Hawaii
Volcanoes in March 1998 and have been visiting
since then. During 1998 and most of 1999
the lava has been flowing into the ocean
at the Kamokuna Entry which is located 3.5
miles east of the end of Chain of Craters
Road. Puu O'o has not been doing much activity
at the summit. On 12 September 1999 the lava
from Puu Oo vent abrubtly stopped for 12
days. There was however a small pad of spattering
at the bottom of the crater. Also the main
lava tube leading to the ocean started to
collapse at many points.On 16 September 1999
the lava inside Puu Oo started to rise. On
24 September 1999 lava was seen spattering
on the southside of the cone as well as in
Puka Nui on the west side. Nevertheless this
was very spectacular. The lava fountain on
the south side of the cone was reaching nearly
50 feet in height. About a 1-2.5 miles southeast
of Puu Oo there were several perched lava
ponds and rootless shields. These lava ponds
formed as a result of a blockage in the lava
tube and the lava overflowing from an opening
in the old lava tube. The opening on top
of a lava tube is a "skylight".
These skylights overflowed to create large
shieldlike structures. Most of the activity
remained on Pulama Pali until 16 December
1999 when the lava started to flow at the
Higcastle entry. Part of the old Chain of
Craters road was covered at that time. On
17 December 1999 a new entry at Laeapuki
was observed. I was there as the lava first
started going over the cliff.
